While it looks like any other USB-C flash drive, the iXpand Luxe’s support for iPhone makes it nearly unique. I also copied about 5 GB of files at once onto the drive to see if that would cause it to heat up. Though moving very large files onto the drive takes some patience. To me, these data transfers are quick enough to be useful. Copying the same file from the drive to the handset took about 30 seconds. Using the Lightning port and SanDisk’s app, moving the 1 GB test file from an iPhone 12 to the iXpand Luxe took about 67 seconds. Moving the same file from the drive to the tablet took approximately 6 seconds - reading from external drives is always faster than copying to them.

But that’s just the start. The app can copy all your iPhone images onto the external drive at the push of a button. The free SanDisk iXpand Drive application is used with every device that has a Lightning port. The software includes a typical file browser, and you can transfer files from your handset into this app and back. Mac and iPad Pro/Air users don’t have to install anything to use the iXpand Luxe. A loop on one end makes attaching the accessory to a keychain a breeze. The only exception is a plastic cap that fits over either the USB-C or Lightning connector. The casing is metal, and seems very sturdy.

For one, transferring 100MB+ files back and forth between iCloud gets tedious. Cloud-storage systems have taken much of the hassle out of moving files between computers, but certainly not all.
